After reading chapter 6, I thought the most surprising thing to me was how useful the library really is. Throughout my middle school, and high school years, I never used the school library or the public library. It was always accessible, but I never took the opportunity to explore it. The chapter discusses the many things the library offers and it also talks about how organized it is. The library is very useful and I need to use it more.
The library is a place that “knows specific resources and directions to follow-and they therefore can save you a lot of time and help you find solid, useful support for your research.” This basically is saying that the library isn’t just a place to rent books to read for pleasure and research, but a place to find specific facts and specific material to help one with research. The library is also a great place to get away from noise and distractions and a place to study and have some time to ones self.
The library has books, maps, encyclopedias, journals, newspapers, and other useful research materials. All these years I’ve been using the internet as a place to research, but not all the time am I able to find specific materials and facts. The library is very organized and has a lot more facts than the internet.

Diversity is hard to find across the country. When you hear diversity, some cities that come to mind are San Francisco, Oakland, New York and other large cities with vast populations. In a recent article in the San Jose Mercury, San Jose is now more diverse then San Francisco and Lose Angeles. San Jose’s Asian and Latino populations have increased over this past year, creating a more diverse city.
Even though San Francisco is attracting the young, Caucasian group, San Jose and other South Bay cities are grabbing the attention of a new group of immigrants: Indians.
The new vast population of Indian immigrants has allowed San Jose and San Francisco go have the same percentage of Asians in their cities. San Francisco is always thought of as being a more Asian populated city but now everyone will have to think again about San Francisco and incorporate San Jose in there talk.
Diversity is important in creating a better city I think. With diversity, it creates lots of new ethnic relations. Business between different diversities can create better revenue for businesses and help expand businesses.
There is also a down side to having such a diverse population. This can cause hate crimes, gang disputes and other problems that different races have. People hear a lot about different gang wars going on in different cities, but the San Jose area has decreased in its crime rates.

The article I chose is about the Academy awards show that aired today. This award ceremony acknowledges all the actors, actresses, and producers who have produced magical pieces of film and that deserve to be noticed for their work. Slumdog Millionaire is a movie written and produced by Danny Boyle and Simon Beaufoy. Slumdog Millionaire was a very heart swelling movie. This movie is about a young boy from Mumbai who loses his mother and becomes an orphan that goes through lots of hardship trying to find his childhood lover. This movie was one of the greatest movies I’ve ever seen, and I must compare this movie to being just as good as The Dark Knight.
This movie came into the Academy awards with ten movie nominations and left with eight academy awards. I have to agree with all the awards that they won and I actually think they should have won more. This movie made me realize how much of a luxury lifestyle I live in. Having a sewage system, a house, clean clothes, and an education are all things that I have and that many people in India have never experienced. This movie I think has really made me change the way I appreciate life and made me cherish the many luxurious things that I have living in the United States.

The group AVODAH, is a Jewish service group that helps people with social change, Jewish learning and community building. AVODAH is a program that lets young Jews work for a whole year in a low-income communities in New York City and Washington D.C. This year away from home creates a community within their peers and fellow AVODAH workers. AVODAH was created for people to combine Judaism and social activism in different ways that strengthen their selves.
Advocacy is a public support for a particular cause or policy. The religious affiliations, practices and beliefs can help advocacy because it can change the way you think. Your religious affiliations are a big part in the way one thinks. Being a Jew, has a big impact on joining the AVODAH program because it is a Jewish based program. Most likely a person with religious background will follow a program that is based upon their same religion.
The religious affiliations, practices and beliefs encourage people to stick with their religion. Their practices and influences help persuade people to advocate themselves into doing better for themselves and their community. These practices encourage not only for Jewish people to join their program, but they encourage other religious based people to join the program and help. The AVODAH program is a great way to expand their community and widen their Jewish knowledge.

The article I chose is about the ever popular topic on high gas prices. The gas prices in the bay area have risen by 25 cents per gallon, which is way higher than just a month ago. People are frustrated and are wondering what the real deal is. Oil refineries in the United States have decided to pump more gas because it is costing them more money then they want to spend. Gas stations now must purchase oil from foreign countries from the Middle East and South America, where one barrel of gas is ten dollars more than a barrel of gas found in the United States. Most United States refineries have cut down on oil production to keep gas prices up on purpose, so that they can make more money off drivers that must buy gas. This new information has caused many drivers to spend more money on gas then they want to.
This article I felt is very important to me and my generation. With gas prices rising higher and higher, it feels like they inch its way back up to five dollars a gallon. With the economic troubles that the United States already faces, these high gas prices will kill the economy by itself. This issue has brought up a huge red flag in my mind because if the gas prices go back up, I’ll be one of the angry drivers in the bay area.
This issue is not only found in Silicon Valley, but is all around the world. Since I’m from San Francisco, so I face a very high gas price. Please click the link posted in the city of San Francisco.

The article I chose was from the Iowa State Daily newspaper written by Robert Baptiste. He talks about a special exception to the No Child Left Behind Act. This law requires that a “highly qualified” teacher must teach every public education math and English class. In Hawaii, there is a time for students to learn life lessons rather then educational lessons. The classes are taught by “kupunas”; elders that teach students about the Hawaiian culture. The kupunas are old and don’t have a college degree, making them ineligible for them to teach classes. The Hawaii Department of Education fought for their elders and had the exception made to allow the kupunas to stay and teach.
The ideas given in the chapter reminded me of playing sports. The ideas are mainly focused on connecting with the topic. Like all sports players, they love the sport they are connected to. By being connected to the topic or sport, they can succeed with great success and do well in what ever they’re talking about or playing. The composer must address the audience a certain way, and talk to them with a certain tone to connect well with their audience. Like sports players, they must carry themselves with class and connect with his/her fans in a manner where they’ll like them rather then hate them.
One lifestyle that comes to mind is the story of Kobe Bryant. He began his career very cocky and was hated by many NBA fans, but as he gained more experience he started to present himself with more class and in a manner that the fans loved. (Click his name for the link)

The article I chose was a piece found in the San Jose Mercury. It is about the city of San Jose deciding what to do about the major economic crisis. The people of San Jose had to decide what to do about the public safety cuts that is going to happen. The residents are willing to take a tax increase to help the budget to keep crime programs and public safety jobs. Also the library is willing to close at earlier hours to help the city budget. In the end the city had to cut many jobs to help the economic problem, leaving many San Jose residents looking for jobs.
The reason I chose this article because it affects the whole United States. The economic is shown just how bad it has gotten in the United States; it has reached large cities forcing them to cut many budgets. I believe that this problem will be around for along time and until the government finds a way to diminish this huge debt, our economic woes will not vanish.
One quote I felt that really represented what this article is about was said by Willie Mast. “He pulled us all together.” I think that quote really represents what a city can do when faced with a difficult situation. The city of San Jose came together to make a decision that would best benefit the city of San Jose. The quote is a strong group of words that explains what the city of San Jose is. Together.

The article I chose was found in the Spartan Daily by Staff Writer Scott Reyburn. This article is about the new safety police officers that will be watching guard the lobby of Campus Village Building C. Starting last Thursday, between the hours of 12am to 3am, people going in and out of the building had to provide identification. For people without identification, they weren’t allowed access.
This article really attracted me because I currently live in Campus Village Building C, and this whole matter deals with my living style. I believe that the new security process is a little unnecessary. I think it might be too much and over excessive; they don’t need people to show identification and they don’t need people to check their guest in. If they had a security guard watch the door and make sure guest are escorted around would be sufficient enough to keep security in the building.
One thing I really think represents what is going on in the article is parents. Some parents are over protective and maybe have a little too much control of their kids. The campus feels that the students living in Building C are in some sort of danger and need to enforce better security. I just think that the whole thing with the new security is unnecessary and not needed.

Angelina Karpovich, a Ph.D. Candidate from the University of Wales, wrote the blog article that I chose as my favorite. Her piece talked about her decision to start up a website that soon became her personal blog. The reason she started up her own Web site was to express her thoughts about online communities. She began to keep a separate blog between her academic blog and social blog. After a few weeks, Angelina noticed that her social life didn’t grab anybody’s attention, leading her to delete her social blog and focus on her academic blog. Angelina couldn’t resist the urge of the new fad called “blogging”, and she started a blog initially for research use only. Again, her blogs became a personal thing and it introduced her to new people and new things.
I chose this article because it was interesting to see how someone became so hooked on blogging. Even though Angelina tried to create a blog for academic and research reasons, she couldn’t resist going back to her personal life. She had to share her thoughts and feelings about certain personal experiences and led her to start up personal blogging again.
I’ve personally never done any type of blogging, but I’ve read many blogs that talk about any topic possible. To be able to learn how to do my own blog would help my technological knowledge and help me start up my own blog site.
